They are moving away from the premium segment to try to conquer the luxury car sector. In addition to the name, the company’s strategy includes an upward repositioning of its products. Therefore, the Land Rover Range Rover or Land Rover Defender, formats that the brand considers unsuitable for the current market scenario, will be discontinued. In this case it is Ranger Rover, Defender and Discovery, which will lose the first name to keep only what until now was the model. Jaguar maintains its own identity and name regardless of the sub-brands that depend on Land Rover. It will be the official definition for a range of products divided into four ranges. It is a true statement of intent that anticipates everything that is to come for Jaguar-Land Rover, which has become JLR. It is an acronym that takes center stage and begins to name this brand from now on. This is how the evolution of its strategies is almost constant, as has just happened with a legendary name that has transformed itself to adapt to this environment. The automotive industry is one of the most dynamic that can be found, driven by the need to meet the demands of its customers. Go with the straight-six and beware of those expensive options.Mobility is changing and so are drivers, so brands must change simultaneously. Given the sizable premium it commands over the straight-six, we believe the latter offers better value. It doesn’t make the Defender a sporty 4x4, quite frankly. However, the V8 adds much weight to the front, and balance is compromised as a result. Blessed with a supercharger, the 5.0-litre mill cranks out 518 horsepower and 461 pound-feet for strong acceleration and a lovely soundtrack. Our latest test drive involved a V8-powered Defender 110. With 395 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque on tap, this unit is much better suited to the Defender. The available 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder, on the other hand, benefits from a turbocharger and mild hybrid technology for excellent throttle response and quick acceleration. While we didn’t get the opportunity to test the turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine fitted as standard in the 2022 Land Rover Defender, we suspect it barely gets the job done with a mere 296 horsepower. Some people like that, but there are better ways in our opinion to dress up the Defender and capture its legendary spirit. As you can see on the pictures, our tester was both black and blacked out. Personally, we prefer the adventurous side more than the luxury aspect. You can pretty much build your own custom Defender if you want. Selection is very generous when it comes to engines and options. That being said, it’s easy to see why most people opt for the more practical Defender 110. The former is particularly charming thanks to its unique design. While the two-door 90 looks like a toy, the four-door, three-row 130 is more of a minibus. The higher the number, the longer the vehicle. There are three Defender configurations to choose from: 90, 110 and 130.
